How to Be Productive While Working from Home

In uncertain times, it can be difficult to stay focused. We are human and we are built for community but at this time, we must rely on our virtual communities. For some, working remotely is nothing new although for many, this is an all new territory.  Let us first say that you are not alone, we are all weathering this storm together and secondly, we are here to help you with any challenges you might face.

If this is your first time working from home, we’ll share a few tips on how to keep your focus and set yourself up for virtual success. And remember, we’re here if you need anything!

The Joys of Working from Home

Working from home has a great many benefits. Consider the time you save by not commuting. That’s time that can be spent on self-care, time with family, and taking up those hobbies or interests you’ve left on the back burner.

Of course, working from home also greatly reduces your exposure to germs and other bacteria keeping you healthy, happy and strong. And those living with you benefit from it too!

It should also be noted, a Standford study reported that employees working from home might actually be 13% more productive! That’s right, directors everywhere can exhale a sigh of relief knowing their employees could potentially be getting more work done.

Take Advantage of Technology

We are fortunate to live in an age of thriving technology. If you’re feeling isolated, keep in contact with your bosses and coworkers. You don’t have to have a big business, even entrepreneurs can utilize social media platforms. You might even go “old school” and pick up the phone to talk.

There are also those additional platforms that can help you to go the extra mile. Need to build a website? Wix can help you with that. How about a webcast complete with polling features and Q&A? Try Vimeo. And for your videoconferencing needs, there are companies like Zoom and HighFive that have your back. And again, we’re here for you, too. Just think of us as your communication consultants.

Don’t let the distractions stop your growth efforts. Continue to nurture your relationships because when all this is said and done, those relationships will still exist. So invite your client for a virtual coffee meeting, or give someone a call just to say hello. Have kids at home? You’re probably not the only one. That just gives you one more thing to bond over. Live life and your business authentically.

And if the kids are putting a cramp on your work life, be sure to set your workspace boundaries. Clear a space in your home – a room, a nook, a table, whatever – and declare that as your office. Then of course, bring in the right tools such as noise eliminating headphones, additional monitor(s), or even a simple Do Not Disturb sign on the door. The adjustment period may take time and will take a certain level of discipline to adjust to. Finally, speak with your family and let them know that when you are in your “office”, you are working. Set your work hours for work, and your family time for when you’re off the clock.

Don’t Burn Yourself Out

With so much time on your hands, it’s easy to throw yourself into work headfirst. Be sure to come up for air occasionally. Take a brain break. If you hit a wall, step a way, read a book, or listen to a podcast and get some new creative juices flowing. When the work is done, take some time to prioritize the next day’s projects, maybe share your highs and lows with your family, and then unplug. Put your phone on silent and take some time to unwind.
